![]() Mayflower Laundry & Drycleaning Co., established in 1929, is a three generation, professional full-service laundry and drycleaning company located in Hartford, Connecticut. With three convenient locations, route service, student laundry service, and Drapemasters of Hartford, Mayflower is a Sanitone Certified Master Drycleaner and member of the International Fabricare Institute, International Drycleaners Congress, Northeast Fabricare Association, and the Hartford Laundry and Drycleaners Association. Mayflower's History Mayflower Laundry & Drycleaning Co. began in a small converted garage at 15 Mather Street, Hartford, Connecticut in 1929. Newlyweds Celia and Pinney Katz had honeymooned just a few years earlier where they noticed a laundry delivery truck with the name Mayflower on it. Celia, her new husband Pinney and brother Moe decided that was the business they were looking to establish in Hartford. Celia called her stock broker and told him to sell her fathers wedding gift of stocks in order to start a business. But this was 1929, the market crashed, and the broker told her that her money was gone. A headstrong woman, Celia did not believe the broker, hired an attorney, and discovered the stocks had in fact been sold before the crash and her money was intact. So, in 1929, during the challenging days of the Depression, Mayflower Laundry & Drycleaning was born. In 1950, "Ceil" and "Pinkey's" only child Lois married Al Reiner and in 1952, Al created Drapemasters of Hartford in answer to his business challenge of finding something big enough to fill up the newly purchased large drycleaning machine. In 1979, Al was elected to the Board of Directors of the International Fabricare Institute (IFI) and in 1983 he was elected President. In 1984 while representing IFI at an International Drycleaners Congress meeting in China, the hotel's flat work ironer malfunctioned. Hearing that the President of IFI was a guest at the hotel, the hotel manager enlisted Mr. Reiner's help and the machine was successfully repaired. Perhaps this was the real reason for happier U.S./China relations. We can only guess. Today, Celia and Pinney's grandchildren Jim and Gail and their father Al still own and operate the family business at 266 Prospect Avenue. Mayflower Laundry & Drycleaning Co. still provides pickup and delivery service as well as Sanitone Certified Master Drycleaning services, alterations, rug cleaning, leather and suede cleaning, wedding gown preservation, and more.
